Poplar Bluff, Missouri man sentenced to 10 years in federal prison on drug charges

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Missouri -- A Poplar Bluff, Missouri man will spend the next 10 years in federal prison for possessing cocaine with the intention of distributing it locally.

Gregory K. Richie, 26, was sentenced to 120 months by U.S. District Judge E. Richard Webber after he had earlier pleaded guilty to one felony count of possession with intent to distribute 5 grams or more of cocaine base, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.

With his plea, Richie admitted that on March 22 a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper stopped a vehicle he was driving on Golden Street in Powe in Stoddard County, Missouri. The trooper reportedly noticed a "very strong odor of burnt marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and asked for consent to search," the U.S. Attorney's office said.

Richie reportedly granted permission for the Missouri trooper to search his vehicle and his person.

During the search, the Missouri trooper reportedly found 14 grams of cocaine base, also known as "crack cocaine," and a bag of marijuana in the seat cushion of the front bench seat.

"Richie told the trooper that he was being paid to transport the cocaine from Malden to an individual in Poplar Bluff," the U.S. Attorney's office said.

At the time of Richie's arrest, he was on state probation for possession of cocaine base, which reportedly resulted in a mandatory minimum of 10 years under federal law.

Also assisting in the investigation were members of the Drug Enforcement Administration. Assistant U.S. Attorney Larry Ferrell handled the prosecution for the government.
